The Magic Playbox gets school children thinking outside the box

From water containers to plastic tubing, castoff materials are proving popular on the playground with the launch of The Magic Playbox, a new programme designed to encourage unstructured, child-driven play.

Developed and delivered by Sport Waitākere, The Magic Playbox comprises of a large wooden crate filled with a variety of upcycled materials including rope, tubing, wood, plastic containers and more. The seemingly dispensable objects support children to explore their imagination without rules.

Sport Waitākere CEO, Lynette Adams, says international studies demonstrate the importance of free-play during developmental years, from supporting creativity to motor skills and building confidence - all which promote children’s wellbeing.

“The Magic Play Box supports invention and outside-the-box thinking. The process is straightforward, adults stand back and let kids be kids. In doing so, we allow them to learn cornerstone strengths such as team-work, problem-solving and self-confidence,” she says.

“Several primary schools have already trialled The Magic Playbox, creating everything from swings to moveable carts.”

Tirimoana School in West Auckland was the first to trial The Magic Playbox. Deputy Principal, Tracey Richardson, says the children loved the opportunity to free play, with some knowing instantly how they would use the parts.

“During our time with The Magic Playbox, it was wonderful to witness true creativity,” she says.
“There were robots, sailing boats and fishing expeditions, home corners, simple machines and tight rope walkers. Some played and created alone, others worked in pairs and groups. Creations were interpreted differently resulting in explanations and shared play.”

“The children were always excited to go outside during break time and play with The Magic Playbox. As the supervising teacher, it enabled me to get to know so many learners – it was magical!”
