WHAT IS HEALTHY ACTIVE LEARNING?

Healthy Active Learning is a joint initiative between Sport New Zealand and Te Whatu Ora Healthy NZ and the Ministry of Education assisting schools and kura to improve child and youth wellbeing through healthy eating and drinking, and quality physical activity.

In Tāmaki Makaurau, Sport New Zealand invests in Aktive who partners with Sport Waitākere in West Auckland. A number of Healthy Active Learning Advisors and Community Connectors currently work across West Auckland with 20 local primary and intermediate schools.

This team promotes and encourages active and healthy school environments, supports teacher confidence and development to deliver quality health and physical education curriculum programmes, and promotes better connections between schools and their local communities that enhance physical activity experiences for tamariki. OUR MAHI OUT WEST

The physical activity workforce works with primary and intermediate schools, with the following expected outcomes:

  • Schools and kura to understand and recognise the value of the Health and Physical Education and Hauora curriculum.

  • Schools and kura to create an environment that supports and promotes quality play, sport and physical activity.

  • Teachers and kaiako to be confident and capable in delivering the Health and Physical Education and Hauora curriculum.

  • Schools and kura to create a healthy food and drink environment.

  • Schools and kura to make well informed decisions when engaging with external providers.

  • Schools and kura to strengthen their connections with their wider community, including whānau and local health and physical activity providers.​​​​​​​

Sophie Gibbins

Healthy Active Learning Advisor​​​​​​​

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Sophie is passionate about her own, and others health and wellbeing. she holds a degree in Sport and Exercise Science, and a postgrad in Secondary PE and Health teaching. Sophie has been teaching within Secondary and Intermediate PE and Health, and working within Fitness and Health for the last 10 years. She has most recently studied Holisitic health wellness coaching for the general population. Sophie loves to educate children that through moving our bodies and understanding our own unique health, we can thrive. Ema

Stefan Mateariki

Healthy Active Learning Advisor

Stefan has a passion for Health and Physical Education, having been a representative Men's Netball player; including televised fixtures with the Stars Men's Netball teams in 2022 and 2023. After graduating with his Bachelor of Education (Teaching), he spent the last few years working with diverse learners as a Primary Teacher in East Auckland. Stefan is looking forward to utilising his previous background in Sport and combining it with his passion for Education to support Health and Wellbeing initiatives in Waitakere. Email

Christian has been working in the Sport and Rec sector for the past 5 years. He has developed a passion for bringing the community together, with a specific interest in our tamariki and rangatahi. Within his new role, he hopes to provide partnership and empowerment across our West Auckland Community. Email

Shanley Joyce

Shanley has been working in the education sector for over 15 years, most recently as a Healthy Active Learning Advisor at Sport Auckland.  Her last school post was as a Deputy Principal at Long Bay College, she has also been a professional learning and development facilitator and lecturer at the University of Auckland College. Email
