Rugby League Empowering Wellbeing at St Dominic’s College

St Dominic's College has made a significant stride, not just on the field, but also in the realm of mental health. Backed by Sport Waitākere, the high school participated in the Auckland Secondary School Rugby League Competition for the second consecutive year, but with an added focus—wellbeing.

Led by Linda Hellesoe, Wellbeing Lead for Mental Wealth at NZ Rugby League, the initiative incorporated the Le Va program, aiming to empower rangatahi by providing them with essential tools to understand mental health. Through rugby league, the workshop became more than just a sporting event—it was a platform for education, conversation, and support.

Seventeen girls from St Dominic's participated in the workshop, which seamlessly blended sport and mental wellbeing. Rugby became the vehicle to foster discussions around mental health, emphasizing how young athletes can assess their own well-being and check in on their friends. The workshop sparked critical conversations, encouraging these young women to become more aware of the signs when someone might be struggling and where to turn for support.

"This initiative is about using rugby to teach vital life skills," says Jemma Palmer, Youth Sports Advisor at Sport Waitākere. "Mental health is such an important part of our lives, and this workshop gave the girls a safe space to talk about it. We’re so grateful for Linda’s mahi, and we’re looking forward to continuing this partnership."

By combining physical activity with mental health education, this initiative is helping build resilient young women, ready to face both the challenges of sport and life.
